Wine Review – 2007 Escudo Rojo

escudo-rojo-baron-philippe-de-rothschildFrom: Chile

Price: $13.50

The Escudo Rojo Baron Philippe de Rothschild is one of my personal favorite red wines year after year.  I love this wine so much that I use it as my “red wine benchmark” to which I compare all other red wines costing less than $20.  Since its inception in 2003, this first-rate Chilean red wine has been more than a one-dimensional, one-trick pony.  It has consistently delivered layers of interesting flavors that include several different berries, chocolate, spices, and just the right amount of oak and smokiness to really make it stand out in a crowd of competing red wines.

This dynamite Chilean red wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc.  The grapes used to make this wine are hand-picked, then blended, and spend 12 months in French oak before being bottled.

In my opinion, the Escudo Rojo Baron Philippe de Rothschild is one of the best kept secrets on the shelf.   It tastes like a first-growth French Bordeaux.  If this wine were to have a label with Bordeaux, France on it instead of a Chilean label you’d need to ante up at least $50 for it.  At $13.50 a bottle, you can have your wine and a juicy steak, too!
