Wine Review – 2007 Dona Paula Malbec
Price: $13.95
“Second time around…so much better than the first time”** was running through my head on the second night of drinking Dona Paula Malbec. The night before, I was not digging on this Argentinean red wine at all. When I first opened it, it just tasted like some bad “lab made” concoction. I said to my wife, “What a fugasi!”
This Malbec had no style or swagger to it. It sort of tasted like a manufactured California Merlot to me, not an Argentinean Malbec. Maybe I’ve just become accustomed to that spicy, assertive zip that the Malbec grape typically offers. Fortunately (and suprisingly), this Malbec did deliver a slightly better experience on the second night. Overall I just found it to be an odd wine. It had a very weird cherry, oaky flavor on the front end, and finished with some of that Malbec that I know and love. In my opinion, if more of the finish was put into what you initially taste from this wine, it wouldn’t have been just a so-so wine. I’m not real happy about the fact that I paid nearly $15 for this dud.
