On this particular Fancy Dinner Friday, I went on a hunt for an extra special red wine that would make this evening’s spaghetti and meatballs seem a whole lot fancier.  It was the Friday before Mother’s Day, so I thought that it might be nice to start my wife’s weekend off with a bang!

So, I took a trip down to my local wine shop and had a chat with my trusted wine advisor, Ed.  Ed’s no slouch when it comes to wine.  He’s been in both the restaurant and retail wine business nearly his entire career.  Furthermore, he’s taken most of the wines in the store for a “taste drive” and he doesn’t bore you with information that goes beyond how a wine actually tastes…unless you ask him.  On this Friday I said to Ed, “Money is no object.  Do you have a Cabernet Sauvignon on the shelf that will blow my wife’s mind as an early Mother’s Day gift”?  Ed proceeded to hand me a bottle of 2004 Crauford Cabernet Sauvignon Maroon Vineyard Tattoo from Napa Valley, California.  I saw the word “Tattoo” on the label and floated off in a daydream…all I could envision was Herve Villechaize saying, “De plane, De plane” from the opening scenes of the 70’s ABC TV show Fantasy Island.  After handing me this bottle of red wine he said to me, “Mark, this isn’t a ‘call up your beer buddies and ask them if they want a glass of wine’ kind of wine.  This is some killer juice that should be savored with someone who will appreciate it.  It will blow your socks off”!   At $25, I told Ed that he’d better be right!

As it turned out, good old Ed was as good as gold with this stellar selection.  This California Cab was a monster of a wine.  It was bold and rich with berry fruit and chocolate that was just incredible with our usual Friday night spaghetti and meatballs.  I can honestly say that this wine is definitely worth the splurge on a special occasion and certainly worth looking for.

I give the 2004 Crauford Maroon Vineyard Tattoo Cabernet Sauvignon 4 Stars out of 4.  It’s an intense and powerful red wine to share with a wine lover in your life.
