Wine Review – 2007 7 Deadly Zins Zinfandel

2007-7-deadly-zinsFrom: California

Price: Way too much!

It’s a good thing that you only have to read this wine review and didn’t have to be witness to my raw emotional dislike for this farce of a wine like my wife did.  The profanity that left my mouth as I drank this $20 bottle of fake California Zin was not a pretty scene.  I had an incredible wine experience with the Michael and David Phillips Winery’s 2006 Earthquake Zinfandel, and gave it a raving review.  It was one of the best red wines that I’ve personally tasted this year.

The question that I have for the Michael and David Phillips Winery is, “How do you go from a great tasting Zin at $25 bucks to an awful, fake tasting Zin at $20 bucks?”  The 2006 Earthquake Zin by the Michael and David Phillips Winery is awesome at around $25.  But at the $20 price point, this 7 Deadly Zins Zinfandel is nothing more than a $20 gag joke because of its labeling.

This Zin is fully “manufactured” and an utter disappointment.  It has that familiar “mad scientist in a lab” taste that I’ve become accustomed to tasting in so many California red wines this year.

If you enjoy your red wines tasting like Vanilla Cherry Coke then you might like this Zin.  For me, paying $20 and it not delivering anything close to its $25 2006 Earthquake Zin is a sin!

I give the 2007 7 Deadly Zins 1 Star. It’s just dreadful at $20 bucks a pop.

Your opinion is definitely in the minority. So is the price you paid for it. A quick glance on line will reveal plenty of 7…Zins at $13-15. "Fake," "manufactured," and "mad scientist in a lab," are comments which are more histrionic than constructive. The only valuable point from your "review" is not to buy it at "$20 bucks (your redundancy) a pop." But as already mentioned, you don't have to be a wine critic to figure that out.

    • Thanks for your input. You and I are certainly on opposite sides of the fence with this wine, and that’s okay. I don’t know who or what you’re referring to when you say the “majority”, but I’m personally ok with being in the minority on this one. After tasting this producer’s amazing Earthquake Zin, I didn’t think that their 2007 7 Deadly Zins would be worlds apart, with only a few dollars separating them. For now, I think I’ll just stick with the likes of Four Vines, Rosenblum, and Seghesio. Regarding looking at prices online – I don’t live in a state that allows direct shipment to consumers, so I don’t bother to look at prices on line. Finally, I write about my personal experience with each particular wine in a passionate and completely honest manner. If the description has come across as “histrionic” rather than constructive, then so be it. With that said, I am neither a wine critic nor a wine maker, and I’m not trying to tell winemakers how to make their wine better, I just communicate whether I like something or not. People can agree, disagree, or just ignore.

The 2007 7 deadly received a 90 from Parker. I personally know the Lodi region and would agree that $20 was way too much to pay when it goes for 13.99 and 9.99 one offs now and again.

And by the way they use way more than 7 growers. This program has grown since 2005 from 250K cases to 750K. They absolutely have more than 7 growers now.

      • I like you have a great deal of respect for Mr. Parker and his writing, however I personally did not find this wine very enjoyable. A price of $9.99 would not change this opinion. On the other hand, I did thoroughly enjoy this same producers’ Earthquake Zin. In fact, it was one of my favorite wines of 2009.
BTW, thank you for sharing these impressive production numbers. It certainly shows that others enjoy this wine. I am usually a fan of Lodi Zins, are there any that you would like to recommend that I try?
